Miami, Florida – Sierra Samuels was employed by the Jackson Health System for the past five years, but Miami’s CBS4 is reporting as of September that employment came to an end.
Samuels is accused of posting pictures of a newborn with gastroschisis on her Instagram account. Samuels shared one picture with the caption, “My night was going great then boom!” and “Your intestines posed (sic) to be inside not outside baby! #gastroschisis.”
The CDC defines gastroschisis as: “a birth defect of the abdominal (belly) wall. The baby’s intestines are found outside of the baby’s body, exiting through a hole beside the belly button. The hole can be small or large and sometimes other organs, such as the stomach and liver, can also be found outside of the baby’s body.”
Upon learning of Samuels’s actions, the hospital immediately placed her own administrative leave. After a month’s long investigation, the hospital made the final decision to let Samuels go for violating the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA).
