Voice of the Atlanta Braves dies

Atlanta, Georgia – For the last 29 years of his life, Don Sutton served as the voice of the hometown team, Atlanta Braves. Sutton died in his sleep Monday night. He was 75 years old.

As a teenager working at Turner Field from 1997 to 2001, on my lunch breaks during the games I would step out of the Braves Clubhouse Store and find me an open seat by the Chophouse. While watching I would listen to Sutton call the games as I learned from him about a game that I knew nothing about at the time. It felt as if Sutton was sitting right beside me. Over the years while working at Turner Field Sutton became the voice of the Braves to me.

Before joining the Braves in 1989, Sutton pitched for various teams (Los Angeles Dodgers, Houston Astros, Milwaukee Brewers, Oakland A’s, and California Angels) from 1966 to 1981.
